SJE Inc. Acquires Horlick Company in Massachusetts

SJE Inc. is excited to announce that it has purchased Horlick Company, effective March 31, 2022. Horlick ownership recognized that, in order to grow the company and meet customer demand, they needed to find a business partner with additional specialized functional skills and financial resources to invest in the business. SJE is excited to be that partner and to work with Horlick in a mutually beneficial relationship.

“We are excited to welcome the Horlick team to the SJE family.  They have built a tremendous business, and we look forward to combining our resources to accelerate growth plans for both organizations,” said Dave Thomas, president and CEO of SJE.

Over the past twenty years, Horlick has established itself as a leading manufacturer of custom control panels and motor-generator sets.  Horlick’s commitment to quality and excellent customer relationships will help SJE grow their presence in Massachusetts and the surrounding area. In return, SJE offers additional technical resources and manufacturing capabilities that will augment Horlick’s current capacity and provide access to a broader product offering.

While the acquisition provides growth opportunities for both companies, in many ways it is business as usual. Horlick will continue to operate out of the current facility in Randolph, Massachusetts, marketing under the Horlick brand. Shawn Hennessey, who has managed the day-to-day business for the past 27 years, will continue as Director of Operations.

“We selected SJE due to their similar culture of taking care of their customers, expanded technical resources and their commitment in growing Horlick,” said Hennessey.

SJE looks to partner with companies that have talented employees, opportunities for future growth and a proven track record of strong performance that aligns with SJE’s culture and values. In 2021, SJE acquired two companies: L. W. Allen, based in Wisconsin, and Ohio Electric Control, based in Ohio.

Business Capital Exchange, Robinson & Cole LLP, and Naffah & Company advised Horlick during this transaction.

The Horlick Company Announces the Shipment of a 60 Hz to 50 Hz Motor-Generator Set to a California Based Government Contractor.

The contractor will use the motor-generator set to provide 50 Hz power to a military radar installation for the US Navy.

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, a leading manufacturer of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation, announces the successful completion and shipment of a Model 50SC-253 motor-generator set to a California based government contractor.

The MG set will be used to power military radar equipment for a Navy department firing range. The equipment that the MG Set will be connected to had been procured from overseas and it needed to be supplied with 50 Hz Power.

In the past, the contractor had used solid-state frequency converters; however, these have repeatedly proven to be unreliable in the field. In search of a better solution, they found that a motor-generator set was more robust and that it would deliver a more reliable means of frequency conversion.

Additional research suggested that the Horlick Company was a good candidate for the purchase of a motor-generator set, and a visit to their website proved to be informative and useful. In particular, the on-line quote form made it easy to supply Horlick with all the required design information such as the input and output voltage and frequency.

The military procurement process requires that multiple bids be submitted to an independent procurement contractor who places the order. The contractor has no influence in the procurement decision other than to make a recommendation. As a result, many potential vendors are unwilling to take the time to bid these types of projects. Additionally, due to the nature of the government and its procurement policies, it can often take more than a year for a project to move from an initial inquiry to an actual procurement. The contractor was very impressed with the immediate response from Horlick, including the detailed discussion of the voltage, frequency and power requirements of both the Horlick machine and the radar equipment it would be powering.

The lead EW systems field engineer on the project expressed his “appreciation for the support provided by Shawn Hennessey, VP of Engineering at Horlick, during both the bidding and procurement processes.”

In particular, the Horlick outreach resulted in the discovery that an incorrect value for the input voltage had been provided. This discovery allowed the error to be corrected prior to the order being placed, and thus prevented a problem during procurement. The entire process took around two years. “Horlick was very supportive throughout providing timely updated quotes when requested at consistent prices” the engineer said.

The Model 50SC-253 motor-generator set was delivered in a custom, weather-resistant enclosure. When it was first energized, it was so quiet that several witnesses did not initially believe that it was even running! Horlick 50SC Model motor-generator sets utilize a 4-pole, 1800 RPM, induction motor to drive a 4-pole, 1500 RPM synchronous generator through a V-belt drive system. The output frequency is 50 Hz (+/-1.5%).

The engineer continued, “I highly recommend Horlick for an extremely efficient and helpful procurement process”.

The Horlick Company Announces the Delivery of Several Control Panels to Winbro in Woburn, MA

The PLC-based industrial control panels will be used to control a large AFM grinding machine using distributed control.

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, a systems integrator and manufacturer of industrial control panels, announces the delivery of several, PLC-based, industrial control panels for a customer of the Winbro Group.

Winbro is a manufacturer of Abrasive Flow Grinding (AFM) machines, a developer of AFM processes and a supplier of abrasive media. AFM was developed in the 1960’s as a technology for producing precision finishing, smoothing and polishing of internal surfaces, and for producing controlled curvatures. The technology is used in a variety of industries for processes such as deburring, edge radius generation, and internal polishing.
AFM grinding machine using Horlick control panels
The AFM grinding machine that is the subject of this article is of the larger variety and it is destined for a customer in Europe that manufactures aircraft engine parts. This particular grinding machine will be used for deburring.

Winbro has been working with the Horlick Company since 2012. Originally, Winbro built the control systems for their machines themselves. They later decided to outsource the work and they approached their control panel component supplier and inquired about local control panel builders. The supplier referred Winbro to the Horlick Company.
Main Control panel for AFM machine by Horlick
For this latest project, Horlick built (4) separate control panels and they were mounted at specific locations around the machine. The control panels each contained distributed control that allows them to communicate with each other via Ethernet. The distributed control monitors all of the machine parameters that are being sensed by switches and transmitters and it controls the operation of all of the pumps and valves mounted on the machine. In this case, the utilization of multiple control panels and remote I/O communicated via Ethernet is much more efficient and economical than mounting one main control panel with all of the machine devices hard-wired back to it.

The fail-safe controller and I/O control modules is used to monitor critical features such as the emergency stop buttons, operator push-buttons, end of travel sensors and hydraulic pressure. The safety components utilized in this design comply with all regulations and they satisfy the maximum requirements as they relate to functional machine safety.

“Horlick has worked out very well for us” Said Winbro president Winfield Perry “We give them explicit specification information and they design and build the control panels. They are a very good supplier to work with”

Mr. Perry continued “Horlick’s design capability meets all requirements and standards. Horlick builds all our control panels and has done so since we started working with them. We expect to continue to do business with them in the future and are very happy to offer a testimonial for their work”.

The Horlick Company Announces the Recent Shipment of PLC-based, Industrial Control Panels to a Customer of the Wintriss Controls Group.

The four control panels are to be used to retrofit manufacturing equipment for a US-based, HVAC manufacturer.

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, a systems integrator and manufacturer of industrial control panels, announces the delivery of 4, PLC-based, industrial control panels for a customer of the Wintriss Controls Group. Wintriss, a Massachusetts based company, is a leading manufacturer of press automation, die protection, and safety controls for the metal stamping industry. The end customer for this project is a US-based, HVAC manufacturer. This delivery represents the first in a series of potential projects to be completed with this customer as they retrofit up to as many as 40 pieces of equipment. The equipment supplied by Wintriss provides the customer with upgraded safety control through automation, and it improves the efficiency of their manufacturing equipment.

Prior to working with Horlick, Wintriss manufactured control panels in-house at a facility near Chicago. In 2004, to improve efficiency, lower cost, and bring the manufacturing process closer to their offices in Massachusetts, Wintriss made the decision to outsource the construction of their control panels to the Horlick Company. The Horlick Company was recommended by a mutual supplier and the two companies have been working together ever since.

Dick LaBelle, the Sales and Marketing Manager for Wintriss Controls said, “For more than 10, years we have had a close relationship with the Horlick Company. We originally chose Horlick because they understood our ‘one of kind business’ and because they were able to be flexible in responding to our dynamic delivery schedule. It has been a great relationship and we rely on and trust Horlick to drop ship product directly to our end customers.”

The Horlick Company and Wintriss Controls have developed a very close working relationship. Over the years, it has grown into more of a partnership as the business flow between the companies has become very streamlined. The dynamic nature of the Wintriss’s business requires the relationship to be collaborative.

In order to quote the control panels, the Wintriss sales team uses a custom quoting database provided by the Horlick Company when they estimate Horlick’s portion of their projects. In selling their complete package, Wintriss works with sales representative organizations, OEM manufacturers, and in some cases directly with the final customer. Once the equipment is surveyed and an order is received, a specific retrofit system is designed.

For the control panel portion of the project, Wintriss develops the electrical schematics and sends them, along with their proprietary control components to Horlick to be used for construction. Horlick takes the drawing package, develops a bill of materials that is approved by Wintriss, and then constructs the control panels. All of the control panels supplied to Wintriss are UL508A listed and built to NFPA 70 and 79.

Once construction is complete and prior to shipment, a Wintriss engineer tests the completed system at Horlick’s facility. Quite frequently, in order to consolidate the shipment, Wintriss sends additional components that they are supplying to the customer and Horlick includes them with the shipment.
