The Horlick Company Announces Information on Shipments of Motor-Generator Sets in the Second Quarter of 2018

The Motor-Generators will be used for frequency conversion including 60-50 Hz, 60-400 Hz, and for 60-60 Hz line conditioning

Randolph, MA, September 6, 2018 – The Horlick Company, a manufacturer of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation is announcing information regarding shipments it has made in the second quarter.  The MG sets were shipped throughout the U.S. and they are intended to be used for a variety of applications to include 60-50 Hz and 60-400 Hz frequency conversion, along with 60-60 Hz line conditioning.

The motor-generators will be used in manufacturing industries such as baking and glass manufacturing, while one of the shipments will be used to provide a clean source of power in a military application.  A majority of the motor-generator sets shipped this quarter will be used to power 50 Hz equipment brought over from Europe to run on 60 Hz power here in the U.S.

The Horlick Company manufactures motor-generator sets to be used for both frequency conversion and load-isolation.  Given either a 50 or 60 Hz input, Horlick motor-generator sets can be designed to deliver an output frequency of 50, 60, or 400 Hz.

The details of a few of our shipments are as follows:

  • The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) in China Lake, CA took delivery on four Model 60FC-303 motor-generator sets. Horlick 60FC model MG sets are used as line conditioners to provide a clean source of 60 Hz power.  The 37.5 KVA machines were placed in NEMA 3R, weather-resistant enclosures.
  • A Model 50SC-603 motor-generator set was shipped to Specialty Bakery in Tulsa, OK. Specialty Bakery specializes in the production of high quality buns, rolls and breads.  The 60-50 Hz motor-generator set will be used to power a 50 Hz production line brought over from Slovakia.
  • General Glass in Secaucus, NJ purchased a Model 50SC-603 motor-generator set. Their motor-generator will also be used to power 50 Hz production equipment brought in from Europe.  GGI was originally unsure of their power requirements and if in fact the motor-generator set was the optimal solution.  As a result, they rented a system to prove out the application prior to ultimately making the decision to implement the Horlick motor-generator set as their long-term solution.
  • A Model 400SC-251, 60-400 Hz, motor-generator was shipped to Peak Demand in Wilson, NC. Peak Demand supplies transmission, distribution, substation and OEM products to the utility industry.  In this application, the MG set will be used to provide a source of 480V, 1-phase, 400 Hz to test instrument transformers.  The custom motor-generator set was placed in a sound-reducing enclosure.
  • William R. Nash, Inc., a mechanical contractor in Miami, FL., purchased a Model 50SC-253 motor-generator set at the request of Billund Aquaculture Service from Denmark. Billund is working on a large aquaculture project in South Florida and they specified the 31.3 KVA motor-generator to power 50 Hz equipment they were bringing into the U.S.  The MG set was placed in a weather-resistant enclosure so that it could be located outdoors.

The Horlick Company Announces the Shipping of a Line Conditioning Motor-Generator Set to Atwood Oceanic

Randolph, MA 12/10/2012 – The Horlick Company, a leader in the manufacture of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation, announces the successful completion and shipment of a Model 60FC-2003 motor-generator set to Atwood Oceanics.

The 60FC motor-generator set will be installed on the Atwood Falcon, a semi-submersible oil drilling platform, currently located off the coast of Australia. The Atwood Falcon is a Maltese Cross class drilling platform, with a maximum drilling depth of 25,000 feet.

The Horlick motor-generator set will be installed between the power source for the rig and its sensitive electronics, which are currently experiencing interference from the oil rig power supply. The motor-generator will condition the 60 Hz power, making it clean for the sensitive electronics. The system will be mounted outdoors on the rig platform and as such the motor-generator set will be mounted in Horlick’s custom, weather-resistant, outdoor enclosure.

“Horlick line conditioners are designed to minimize equipment damage, shutdown and data loss in areas where incoming power line fluctuations are a problem.” said Shawn Hennessey Horlick’s Vice-President of Engineering. “Horlick has extensive experience designing and building motor-generator sets for extreme environments such as is found on the deck of off shore drilling platforms”.

Horlick supplies two types of motor generators sets for line conditioning; the FC and the RC lines. The FC Model is mechanically coupled and provided for power capacities up to 375 KVA, whereas the RC Model is shaft driven and designed for applications up to 2000 KVA where a precise output frequency is required.

The FC series 60-60 Hz line isolation motor-generators are rated for continuous duty and they provide a 60 Hz power source free of switching transients, voltage fluctuations and power line noise. 60FC Model motor-generator line conditioners isolate and protect computers, instrumentation and other sensitive electronic equipment from electrical faults that may cause erratic performance or failure. They are ideal in applications such as the one described here, that require load isolation, but do not necessarily require precisely 60 Hz power. The output frequency for the FC series is 60 Hz at no-load and it slips linearly as it is loaded approximately to 59.2 Hz at full-load.

Horlick Company Announces the Successful Refurbishment and Redeployment of Motor-Generator Sets for the Letterkenny Army Depot

Two 60-400 Hz motor generators rebuilt and new PLC based control panel system installed

Randolph, MA 11/06/2012 – The Horlick Company a leader in the manufacture of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation announces the successful completion of an army contract to overhaul and rebuild two motor generators for the Letterkenny Army Depot.

The contract was to refurbish two 75 KVA, 60-400 Hz motor-generator sets. These motor generators, not originally supplied by Horlick, are equivalent to the Horlick MG Set 400TR-603 model.

“This contract was awarded to the Horlick Company because we are one of the only motor generator companies with the experience and expertise required to perform this level of work at a competitive price.” said Shawn Hennessy Horlick’s Vice President of Engineering. “We are presently working on a second contract similar to the first one. The new contract is for two 125 KVA, 60-400 Hz motor-generator sets. We have just completed the work on the first one under this contract and we are preparing to overhaul the second unit now. These would be equivalent to our Model 400TR-1003.”

The scope of work for the completed program announced today included removing the motor-generator sets, bringing them to Horlick’s facility in Randolph, MA, mechanically overhauling them, and outfitting them with a new advanced control system. The mechanical overhaul included changing the bearings, rebalancing the rotors and steam cleaning and baking the rotors and stators. The new control system that was provided contained a programmable logic controller (PLC) and operator interface terminal (OIT) to control the motor-generator set.

Once the overhaul work was completed and the units were re-assembled, the motor-generator sets were given an 8-hour load test at the Horlick Company’s facility in Randolph Mass. Upon successful completion of the load test, the Horlick Company contracted with a local rigger and electrical contractor in Chambersburg, PA to deliver the motor-generators back to Letterkenny and re-install them. To complete the contract, once the motor-generator sets were re-installed, the Horlick Company performed a site startup and training session on the new PLC control system.

Horlick 400TR 60-400 Hz motor-generator sets are reserved for specialized applications. They are most commonly deployed in demanding military environments or in applications where a precise 400 Hz output is required.

60-400Hz MG-Sets are widely used at naval and air force bases, missile and ground support installations, radar and communications test sites, airports and university laboratories. The Letterkenny Army Depot uses these units in support of the Patriot Missile System. The Contract was received in March and completed in September.
