These highlighted MG sets were shipped throughout the world and they are intended to be used in 60-50 Hz, 50-60 Hz and 60-400 Hz frequency conversion applications.

Randolph, MA, January 25, 2019 – The Horlick Company, a manufacturer of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation is announcing information regarding a portion of the shipments it made in the second half of 2018.

The 60-50 Hz motor generator sets will be used in manufacturing industries where testing is required at 50 Hz prior to shipment overseas. The 50 Hz machines will be testing products such as compressed air and process cooling equipment, along with utility protection relays. The 60-400 Hz machines will be used will be used for transformer testing which is one of our more common 400 Hz applications. Lastly, a couple of the motor-generator sets shipped in this second half of the year will be supporting military projects in Europe and the Middle East. For these projects, the motor generator sets are being used to provide 60 Hz power in countries where only 50 Hz is available.

The Horlick Company manufactures motor-generator sets to be used for both frequency conversion and load-isolation. Given either a 50 or 60 Hz input, Horlick motor-generator sets can be designed to deliver an output frequency of 50, 60, or 400 Hz.

The details of a few of our shipments are as follows:

  • General Air Products in Exton, PA purchased their second Model 50SC-73M motor-generator set in the past 6 years. General Air Products uses our 60-50 Hz frequency converters to test compressed air and process cooling equipment that they ship overseas. The motor-generator set was fitted with an oversized generator to allow for better transient performance while they test their equipment.
  • A Model 50SC-301M motor-generator set was shipped to Utility Relay Company in Chagrin Falls, OH. This 60-50 Hz MG set was custom designed for URC’s unique request. URC develops and manufactures protection products for the low voltage circuit breaker retrofit market. URC will be using our motor generator set to provide a source of 400V, 1-phase, 50 Hz power to test thermal, magnetic and solid-state trip devices used in circuit breakers.
  • MGM Transformer Company in Commerce, CA took delivery of a Model 400SC-203, 60-400 Hz motor-generator set. MGM manufactures both dry and liquid filled transformers. MGM will be utilizing our frequency converter to test their transformers. The system we shipped is rated for 20 KW and it was placed in a customized sound-reducing enclosure.
  • A Model 60SC-101 motor-generator set was purchased by Kiple Acquisition Science Technology Logistics & Engineering Inc. (KASTLE) and shipped to the Czech Republic. The 50 Hz to 60 Hz frequency converter was completed on an expedited basis to allow KASTLE to meet their aggressive project schedule. KASTLE has broad experience in chemical and biological warfare defense equipment development.
  • A Model 60SH-1503 motor-generator set was purchased by Houston Fearless 76 to be used to support their overseas intelligence ground support platforms applications. The motor-generator set was mounted in a custom, NEMA 3R, weather-resistant enclosure. This marks the third such identical system that we have shipped them in the past 6 years. Houston Fearless 76 provides services to the Department of Defense.

The Horlick Company Announces Information on Shipments of Motor-Generator Sets in the Second Quarter of 2018

The Motor-Generators will be used for frequency conversion including 60-50 Hz, 60-400 Hz, and for 60-60 Hz line conditioning

Randolph, MA, September 6, 2018 – The Horlick Company, a manufacturer of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation is announcing information regarding shipments it has made in the second quarter.  The MG sets were shipped throughout the U.S. and they are intended to be used for a variety of applications to include 60-50 Hz and 60-400 Hz frequency conversion, along with 60-60 Hz line conditioning.

The motor-generators will be used in manufacturing industries such as baking and glass manufacturing, while one of the shipments will be used to provide a clean source of power in a military application.  A majority of the motor-generator sets shipped this quarter will be used to power 50 Hz equipment brought over from Europe to run on 60 Hz power here in the U.S.

The Horlick Company manufactures motor-generator sets to be used for both frequency conversion and load-isolation.  Given either a 50 or 60 Hz input, Horlick motor-generator sets can be designed to deliver an output frequency of 50, 60, or 400 Hz.

The details of a few of our shipments are as follows:

  • The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) in China Lake, CA took delivery on four Model 60FC-303 motor-generator sets. Horlick 60FC model MG sets are used as line conditioners to provide a clean source of 60 Hz power.  The 37.5 KVA machines were placed in NEMA 3R, weather-resistant enclosures.
  • A Model 50SC-603 motor-generator set was shipped to Specialty Bakery in Tulsa, OK. Specialty Bakery specializes in the production of high quality buns, rolls and breads.  The 60-50 Hz motor-generator set will be used to power a 50 Hz production line brought over from Slovakia.
  • General Glass in Secaucus, NJ purchased a Model 50SC-603 motor-generator set. Their motor-generator will also be used to power 50 Hz production equipment brought in from Europe.  GGI was originally unsure of their power requirements and if in fact the motor-generator set was the optimal solution.  As a result, they rented a system to prove out the application prior to ultimately making the decision to implement the Horlick motor-generator set as their long-term solution.
  • A Model 400SC-251, 60-400 Hz, motor-generator was shipped to Peak Demand in Wilson, NC. Peak Demand supplies transmission, distribution, substation and OEM products to the utility industry.  In this application, the MG set will be used to provide a source of 480V, 1-phase, 400 Hz to test instrument transformers.  The custom motor-generator set was placed in a sound-reducing enclosure.
  • William R. Nash, Inc., a mechanical contractor in Miami, FL., purchased a Model 50SC-253 motor-generator set at the request of Billund Aquaculture Service from Denmark. Billund is working on a large aquaculture project in South Florida and they specified the 31.3 KVA motor-generator to power 50 Hz equipment they were bringing into the U.S.  The MG set was placed in a weather-resistant enclosure so that it could be located outdoors.

Horlick Ships a Large Motor-Generator Set to be used as a 60-50 Hz Frequency Converter at an Airfoil Machining Facility

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, a leading supplier of industrial frequency conversion equipment, recently delivered a Model 50RG-3003 motor-generator set for use at a large Virginia manufacturer of aircraft airfoils.

For this project, the Horlick Company worked exclusively with an engineering design firm and a design-build general contractor in developing the design for the 60 to 50 Hz power system to be used at this new manufacturing facility.  Shawn Hennessey, Horlick’s Vice-President of Engineering, provided technical advice and detailed cost analysis for a variety of options that were considered for this facility.  In the end, the proposal that won the contract and was subsequently accepted by the end-user was based exclusively on Horlick’s recommendations.  From concept to execution, the project was a successful collaboration between a number of companies.

Horlick 50RG Model motor-generator sets utilize a 4-pole, 1800 RPM, induction motor to drive a 4-pole, 1500 RPM, synchronous generator through a reduction gear system.  This motor-generator set is rated for continuous-duty and it is designed to provide 50 Hz power for large industrial loads while minimizing maintenance and downtime.  The 50RG Model provides a clean source of 50 Hz power isolated from switching transients, voltage fluctuations and power line noise.  In North America, they are primarily used by manufacturers who want to create a 50 Hz power source from the 60 Hz power they have available in their facilities.  The 50 Hz power is used by these manufacturers to test their products on the same power source their equipment will find when it is installed and used in countries overseas.

For the construction phase of the project, Horlick worked directly with Rudy L Hawkins who did the electrical contracting work.  Rudy L. Hawkins is one of the largest and most respected electrical contractors in Central Virginia.  David Yancey at Rudy Hawkins said “Horlick provided the documentation and technical support that we required and they were very easy to work with.  They were receptive to the processes that we use and we would be happy to work with them again on future projects

The 60 Hz to 50 Hz motor-generator set supplied was placed in one of Horlick’s custom outdoor enclosures.  It is illustrated in the above photograph.  At the request of the customer, Horlick provided startup assistance and training services for the motor-generator set once it was installed and wired.

Horlick Ships a Motor-Generator Set Used as a 60 Hz to 50 Hz Frequency Converter.

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, Inc. recently shipped a motor-generator set used as a 60-50 Hz frequency converter to an American manufacturer who supplies equipment to the mining and oil industry.

The frequency converter shipped was a Horlick Model 50SC-303. It is rated at 37.5 KVA and will be used to convert 60 Hz power available in the customer’s facility to the 50 Hz power required to test their products prior to shipment overseas. This particular motor-generator set was designed to operate at a variety of 50 Hz output voltages such that it could be used to test equipment going to a wide variety of countries throughout the world.

The customer had initially found Horlick’s website through a Google search. They later contacted Shawn Hennessey, Horlick’s Vice President of Engineering, to discuss the customized options that their application would require.

This project was unique in that the customer wanted the ability to operate at standard and non-standard 50 Hz voltages to include 690V, 480V and 400V. The Horlick Company worked with their generator manufacturer to have a custom 690V, 50 Hz generator built for the project. In order to obtain the 480V and 400V power also required, the customer supplied a 690 x 400/480V step-down power transformer that was mounted to the motor-generator set skid. Additionally, the customer supplied 25A and 50A receptacles that were mounted to the side of the control enclosure. In building this turn-key 50 Hz power source, the Horlick Company integrated all of the customer supplied components with their standard motor-generator set package.

The end result of the modifications was the creation of a very versatile frequency converter that can be used to create a variety of 50 Hz voltages. As can be seen from the photo, the 50 Hz power provided by the generator has been distributed to a number of receptacles mounted on the control panel. Through the easy operation of switches and contactors, the operator can have 400V, 480V or 690V, 50 Hz power present at the receptacles. From here, the customer simply connects a plug and cable that runs from the control panel to their equipment to be tested.

The customer’s engineer in charge of the project said:“This was collaboration between the two of us and everything worked very well. The Horlick Company announces the shipment of two Motor-Generator sets to be used to convert frequency from 60 Hz to 400 Hz.

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, a leader in the manufacture of motor generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation, announces the successful completion and shipment of two Model 400SC, 60-400 Hz, motor-generator sets.  Both units are being installed by manufacturers to test and qualify their products at 400 Hz and these customers turned to Horlick as their supplier for a 60-400 Hz, frequency converting, motor-generator set.

The first unit was a Model 400SC-83, 10 KVA system shipped to Cletronics, Inc. who is a contract manufacturer of custom wound electronic components. Cletronics is a leading supplier of custom transformers, inductors, chokes, and other specialty coils, and their customers include OEM’s in aerospace, military, commercial, and medical industries.

“Horlick delivered a Model 400SC-83 motor generator set to us earlier this year. The new Horlick unit replaced an older unit (not from Horlick), and it is being used to test transformer products. The Horlick unit has a wider voltage range than the old unit and it is better equipped to accomplish our current testing requirements” said Jerry Welch the Material Control Manager at Cletronics “The motor-generator set is meeting our needs. The Horlick Company was very easy to deal with, information from their website and engineering staff was timely and detailed. We are very pleased with the product and we would be definitely do business with Horlick in the future.”

The new motor-generator set is being used to test new cable designs that are being installed in advanced passenger jets. This company was “absolutely satisfied with the excellent product” and expedited delivery. “Horlick kept us informed at all times and provided excellent documentation…in fact we made need another unit!”

The Horlick Company announces the shipment of a custom-built Motor-Generator set for Nautor Marine Electronics

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, a leader in the manufacture of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation, announces the successful completion and shipment of a motor-generator set used to convert voltage and frequency onboard a ship.

NAUTOR MARINE ELECTRONICS, LLC is a marine electrical and electronics contractor, based in Florida who provides comprehensive electrical solutions for a wide variety of ships. Their services range from simple electrical upgrades and retrofits to complex networked navigation system installations.

In this case, Nautor worked with a customer who had a large yacht moored in a South American port where the local power was 380V, 3-phase, 50 Hz. The yacht required 110/220V, 1-phase, 60 Hz power to run the bilge water and fresh water pumps, along with air compressors and other standard hotel loads.

An engineer working for the customer found the Horlick Company website while searching the terms “motor-generator” and “frequency converter”. After reviewing the information on the Horlick website, the customer’s engineer determined that a Horlick motor-generator set was the perfect solution for their application. They contacted Nautor Marine Electronics and asked that a Horlick Model 60SC-251, 31.3 KVA, 50 Hz to 60 Hz motor-generator set be built and shipped as expeditiously as possible.

“The customer requested a motor-generator set to produce 110/220V, 1-phase, 60 Hz power similar that that which we have here in the United States.” said Shawn Hennessey Horlick’s Vice-President of Engineering. “We shipped him a system that would produce the 60 Hz power when he docked in a foreign port that had 3-phase, 50 Hz power source. The unit had to be customized, as it needed to fit in a very small space. We modified our basic design and expedited production per the customer’s request.”

Nautor Marine and their customer were very pleased with the design and performance of the unit, along with its delivery time and the technical support provided by Horlick’s engineering staff throughout the process. “Our customer described the delivery as excellent and on time, and they did not have a problem with the install or startup,” said Captain Gerry Ferrari of Nautor Marine “we would be happy to do business with the Horlick Company again in the future”

The Horlick Company Announces the Shipping of a Line Conditioning Motor-Generator Set to Atwood Oceanic

Randolph, MA 12/10/2012 – The Horlick Company, a leader in the manufacture of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation, announces the successful completion and shipment of a Model 60FC-2003 motor-generator set to Atwood Oceanics.

The 60FC motor-generator set will be installed on the Atwood Falcon, a semi-submersible oil drilling platform, currently located off the coast of Australia. The Atwood Falcon is a Maltese Cross class drilling platform, with a maximum drilling depth of 25,000 feet.

The Horlick motor-generator set will be installed between the power source for the rig and its sensitive electronics, which are currently experiencing interference from the oil rig power supply. The motor-generator will condition the 60 Hz power, making it clean for the sensitive electronics. The system will be mounted outdoors on the rig platform and as such the motor-generator set will be mounted in Horlick’s custom, weather-resistant, outdoor enclosure.

“Horlick line conditioners are designed to minimize equipment damage, shutdown and data loss in areas where incoming power line fluctuations are a problem.” said Shawn Hennessey Horlick’s Vice-President of Engineering. “Horlick has extensive experience designing and building motor-generator sets for extreme environments such as is found on the deck of off shore drilling platforms”.

Horlick supplies two types of motor generators sets for line conditioning; the FC and the RC lines. The FC Model is mechanically coupled and provided for power capacities up to 375 KVA, whereas the RC Model is shaft driven and designed for applications up to 2000 KVA where a precise output frequency is required.

The FC series 60-60 Hz line isolation motor-generators are rated for continuous duty and they provide a 60 Hz power source free of switching transients, voltage fluctuations and power line noise. 60FC Model motor-generator line conditioners isolate and protect computers, instrumentation and other sensitive electronic equipment from electrical faults that may cause erratic performance or failure. They are ideal in applications such as the one described here, that require load isolation, but do not necessarily require precisely 60 Hz power. The output frequency for the FC series is 60 Hz at no-load and it slips linearly as it is loaded approximately to 59.2 Hz at full-load.

Horlick Company Announces the Successful Refurbishment and Redeployment of Motor-Generator Sets for the Letterkenny Army Depot

Two 60-400 Hz motor generators rebuilt and new PLC based control panel system installed

Randolph, MA 11/06/2012 – The Horlick Company a leader in the manufacture of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation announces the successful completion of an army contract to overhaul and rebuild two motor generators for the Letterkenny Army Depot.

The contract was to refurbish two 75 KVA, 60-400 Hz motor-generator sets. These motor generators, not originally supplied by Horlick, are equivalent to the Horlick MG Set 400TR-603 model.

“This contract was awarded to the Horlick Company because we are one of the only motor generator companies with the experience and expertise required to perform this level of work at a competitive price.” said Shawn Hennessy Horlick’s Vice President of Engineering. “We are presently working on a second contract similar to the first one. The new contract is for two 125 KVA, 60-400 Hz motor-generator sets. We have just completed the work on the first one under this contract and we are preparing to overhaul the second unit now. These would be equivalent to our Model 400TR-1003.”

The scope of work for the completed program announced today included removing the motor-generator sets, bringing them to Horlick’s facility in Randolph, MA, mechanically overhauling them, and outfitting them with a new advanced control system. The mechanical overhaul included changing the bearings, rebalancing the rotors and steam cleaning and baking the rotors and stators. The new control system that was provided contained a programmable logic controller (PLC) and operator interface terminal (OIT) to control the motor-generator set.

Once the overhaul work was completed and the units were re-assembled, the motor-generator sets were given an 8-hour load test at the Horlick Company’s facility in Randolph Mass. Upon successful completion of the load test, the Horlick Company contracted with a local rigger and electrical contractor in Chambersburg, PA to deliver the motor-generators back to Letterkenny and re-install them. To complete the contract, once the motor-generator sets were re-installed, the Horlick Company performed a site startup and training session on the new PLC control system.

Horlick 400TR 60-400 Hz motor-generator sets are reserved for specialized applications. They are most commonly deployed in demanding military environments or in applications where a precise 400 Hz output is required.

60-400Hz MG-Sets are widely used at naval and air force bases, missile and ground support installations, radar and communications test sites, airports and university laboratories. The Letterkenny Army Depot uses these units in support of the Patriot Missile System. The Contract was received in March and completed in September.
