Randolph, MA, January 1st, 2021 – The Horlick Company, a manufacturer of motor-generator sets for both frequency conversion and load-isolation, is announcing information regarding a portion of the shipments it made in the second half of 2020. The MG sets were shipped within the United States and internationally. They are intended for a variety of applications to include fixed frequency conversion from 60-50 Hz, 50-60 Hz and 60-400 Hz. Units were also shipped that are to be used in variable frequency and line conditioning applications.
A portion of the motor-generators will be used in equipment manufacturing industries such as cryogenics and aerospace, while others will be used to support maritime dry dock operations. Additionally, Horlick shipped MG sets that will be used to support research efforts and work for the Department of Defense.
Some of the highlights of our shipments are as follows:
- In July of 2020, Horlick shipped a Model 50SC-403M motor-generator set to Janis Research in Westwood, MA. This is the second Horlick 60-50 Hz MG Set that Janis has purchased in the last 2 years. The motor-generator set provided has a stator reconnection switch option that allows Janis to test 50 Hz equipment at 240V, 1-phase, 208V, 3-phase, 50 Hz or 415V, 3-phase.
Janis Research is a world leading provider of cryogenic and material characterization solutions for low-temperature research.
- Horlick supplied a Model 400SC-503 motor-generator set to Bascom Hunter in Baton Rouge, LA. Our 62.5 KVA MG Set will convert frequency from 60 Hz to 400 Hz. It was placed in a custom designed, NEMA 3R, outdoor enclosure.
Bascom Hunter will utilize the 400 Hz provided by our generator to support their Aerospace and Defense Industry work. BH provides products and technical expertise to the Defense Department, along with a range of other industrial customers.
- Horlick collaborated with an engineering team at Raytheon Technologies to fabricate a Model 60FC-73 motor-generator for their facility in Largo, FL.
The motor-generator shipped in August 2020. It was mounted in a sound reducing enclosure and it included casters to make it portable.
The 60FC-73 MG Set is a line conditioner that runs from a 480V, 3-phase 60 Hz input and provides an output of 120/208V, 3-phase, 60 Hz. This MG Set consisted of a number of custom options to meet Raytheon’s specific requirements.
- K. Fox & Associates is a leading MEP engineering firm serving public and private clients around the world. In August 2020, Horlick shipped a Model BVL-803M motor-generator set to their home office in Chantilly, VA.
The 100 KVA MG Set that we shipped will run from a 480V, 3-phase, 60 Hz source and it will provide an output that can be varied from 45-65 Hz. The motor-generator set was placed in a custom designed, NEMA 3R, weather-resistant enclosure. E.K. Fox intends to place the MG Set on a mobile trailer that will support their client’s custom application.
- In October 2020 Horlick completed a project with Bay Maritime located in Panama City, FL. Bay Maritime Consulting provides marine construction consulting services that vessel owners and shipyards use to launch their projects and keep them under budget.
This project with Bay Maritime consisted of the fabrication of (2) Horlick Model 60SC-1603 motor-generator sets. These MG Sets will be used to convert 50 Hz to 60 Hz and generate 200 KVA of power. They were mounted in custom-weather resistant enclosures and they were shipped to a shipyard in Nigeria where they will power 60 Hz ships that are brought into port.

Randolph, MA – The Horlick Company, Inc. recently shipped a motor-generator set used as a 60-50 Hz frequency converter to an American manufacturer who supplies equipment to the mining and oil industry.
The frequency converter shipped was a Horlick Model 50SC-303. It is rated at 37.5 KVA and will be used to convert 60 Hz power available in the customer’s facility to the 50 Hz power required to test their products prior to shipment overseas. This particular motor-generator set was designed to operate at a variety of 50 Hz output voltages such that it could be used to test equipment going to a wide variety of countries throughout the world.
The customer had initially found Horlick’s website through a Google search. They later contacted Shawn Hennessey, Horlick’s Vice President of Engineering, to discuss the customized options that their application would require.
This project was unique in that the customer wanted the ability to operate at standard and non-standard 50 Hz voltages to include 690V, 480V and 400V. The Horlick Company worked with their generator manufacturer to have a custom 690V, 50 Hz generator built for the project. In order to obtain the 480V and 400V power also required, the customer supplied a 690 x 400/480V step-down power transformer that was mounted to the motor-generator set skid. Additionally, the customer supplied 25A and 50A receptacles that were mounted to the side of the control enclosure. In building this turn-key 50 Hz power source, the Horlick Company integrated all of the customer supplied components with their standard motor-generator set package.
The end result of the modifications was the creation of a very versatile frequency converter that can be used to create a variety of 50 Hz voltages. As can be seen from the photo, the 50 Hz power provided by the generator has been distributed to a number of receptacles mounted on the control panel. Through the easy operation of switches and contactors, the operator can have 400V, 480V or 690V, 50 Hz power present at the receptacles. From here, the customer simply connects a plug and cable that runs from the control panel to their equipment to be tested.
The customer’s engineer in charge of the project said:“This was collaboration between the two of us and everything worked very well. Shawn Hennessey provided excellent technical and engineering support. We are quite satisfied with the both the motor-generator and the service that Horlick provide and we would be happy to work with them in the future”
